Due to being a big hit in the arcades, 1985's Gauntlet was converted to a multitude of systems and was one of the first videogames I ever played (p.c version). It was also the first co-op game I experienced - both of us elbow to elbow cramped around the same keyboard.

In the decades since there have been multiple Gauntlet releases and this latest version stays true to the original formula.
For those new to the series, Gauntlet is a Dungeon Crawler. You'll explore ancient catacombs and dungeons discovering treasure chests of gold along the way. On this adventure you must battle against skeletons, mummies, demons and beings that rise the undead from their graves. Even death himself makes an appearance.

It's worth mentioning here that the game is best experienced when playing locally with friends (beer close by). Solo play is an option but dull due to the game's focus on team work.
Players can choose from 5 different characters. Merlin the Wizard, Thor the Warrior, the Elf, the Valkyrie and the Necromancer ( none of us played as the Necromancer so I can't comment on her play style).

The Wizard has 9 magical spells at his disposal. He can freeze opponents, shoot fireballs, turn invisible and when trapped he can teleport past enemies leaving a back to the future inspired fire trail in his wake. Some spells have cool down timers that leave the wizard vulnerable to counter attacks. This and the fact that the wizard takes damage easily prevents him from being too over powered and unbalancing the game.
The Warrior and Valkyrie love being on the front line. Specialising in close range combat they can deal significant damage to all enemy types. Unfortunately this can lead to being overrun by large groups of enemies so players must keep an eye on their surroundings at all times.
Personally I played as the Elf who uses a quick fire bow and arrow. He is more agile than the others and is most effective at long range. Initially I thought he was underpowered but with some practice I was able to inflict a lot of damage.

There isn't a huge variety in the enemy types you'll face. At first I thought this would lead to boredom but after an hour you realise that enjoyment is derived more from successful teamwork. Experimenting with tactics is mightily fun and it's very rewarding when a new team idea helps you get past that boss you've been stuck on for the last 20 minutes.

In closing, Gauntlet offered a really fun local co-op experience that is hard to come by these days.
If you can gather a group of like minded friends for the weekend you'll have a blast.

Looked this up on Amazon and just a digital code. Too bad. Hopefully it will come out on disc.

Hopefully it will one day come out on disc. Nobody should ever miss out on the games narrator.
"The Wizard needs food.......BADLY"
"In all his wisdom the Elf shot the food"
