When did this start? Are you a fan of it?

I immediately think of the original Final Fantasy. You defeat Garland, rescue Princess Sara, and then begin your journey to restore the crystals. You cross that first bridge and then you get the title screen accompanied with the main theme music. I still think that moment is awesome.

Two early examples are Dragon Spirit and Vice Project Doom on the NES.

Voor, what specific examples are you thinking of?

I could have sworn I saw this recently as well. But I personally don't think it makes a difference. I'm pretty sure I know what the game is because I A) started the game up or B) inserted it into the console.

It feels a bit silly but that's just me.

I hate it in racing games.

I just recently started Forza Motorsports 4 and the introductory race was just awful that you're dumped immediately into. So many aids were enabled by default on the car that I finally gave in trying to fight it and just kept the right trigger depressed for acceleration and let it drive itself to the checkered flag.

Oh yeah, it doesn’t make a difference. I thought this was a modern trend. Didn’t realize it had roots back to NES days.
