Yeah, in the past that was my normal reason to buy a console. I'd wait until a triple A game came out that I'd really want and then jump in. Now, it's more of a wait and see approach.
I think it probably started with the N64 for Shadows of the Empire. Heck, I bought the game even before the console as it was out of stock at the time.
For the Playstation it would have been to play Final Fantasy VII.
Dreamcast for Soul Caliber.
Xbox for Halo.
Gamecube for Rogue Squadron II.
Wii Sports - Wii
PS3 for Metal Gear Solid IV.
3DS for Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Ever buy a console for one specific game?

Original Xbox, purchase specifically for Halo.

I'm sure that like me, a lot of people purchased their Super Nintendo so they could play Street Fighter II.

Did link between worlds end up justifying the 3DS? I’ve been contemplating picking that one up

I bought a PS2 just to try Kingdom Hearts. I had no interest in it otherwise, but that game was exclusive to the console.

Definitely. It was certainly a darker take on Zelda games. And you can see where some of the ideas from Breath of the Wild originated which was kind of cool.
I've bought a few other games for it as well but haven't taken the time to play them.
I did buy it on sale at Amazon when it dropped to $150 so I didn't pay full price for it which helped.
