Videogame Content creators that are insightful and interesting!

Postby Buttermancan » October 17th, 2019, 9:16 am

Firstly I'd like to say how thankful I am for finding a Video game community that I can engage with.
I don't want to make this post at all political but I just wanted to say that the reason I searched and found this site was due to my disallusionment with mainstream sites. They were mostly concerned with inserting their political viewpoints/agendas in articles/reviews when I was interested in gaming coverage! So after a long search I found this site.

As the subject title suggests.....I have created this post to share some of the content I enjoy. Sites like YouTube heavily promote channels based on Outrage and Negativity. Said content sells and it can be hard to find content where people are talking about their hobby with genuine passion! So I thought I'd offer up some positive channels for you guys!

1. The Retro Hour Podcast

I cant recommend these guys enough. They release a podcast every friday - They talk about the gaming news of that week, then move on to their highlight, a fantastic interview with someone in the gaming industry. Previous guests include : Tom Kalinske, Nolan Bushnell, Howard Scott, Eugene Jarvis, Ed Fries and John Romero to name but a few. I've even registered our resident Dave "The Critic" to be on their show as I think he'd be an interesting character to have on!

2. Retro Game Squad Podcast

These guys are hilarious. When listening I feel like I'm down the pub having a laugh with mates talking about our favourtie games. Each episode, they pick a theme and review a selection of games that fit with said theme.

3. LGR (Lazy game reviews) YouTube

Going by the name of Clint Basinger, this guy covers old PC hardware, PC obscurites, reviews games and has a series called "Tech Tales" which is fascinating, well researched and incredibly entertaining to boot!

4. Classic Gaming Quarterly Youtube

Chris Alaimo has a fantastic series covering the release of most of the mainstream consoles. The videos are lengthy and informative with high production values! He has a second channel called CGQ+ that I highly enjoy. Interestingly Chris mentioned http://www.videogamecritic.com on a recent CGQ+ show.

5. Kim Justice - YouTube

Kim has produced excellent documentaries covering the like's of Amiga, the story of Duke Nukem Forever, Jack Tramiel and Alan Sugar's ruling of Amstrad among many other fantastic videos!

6. Happy Console Gamer (Johnny Millennium) - YouTube

Though he'll talk about upcoming releases and things taking place in the gaming world, the best thing about Johnny is his Enthusiasm and love for gaming. He is a genuine lover of games and his content reflects that!

7. SegaLordX - YouTube

With a channel less than two years old, Sega Lord X has shown that if your content is good enough, if your passion shows through, regardless of YouTUbe's bullshit algorithms you can gain an audience. He is a "MASSIVE" Sega fan and has content that is entertaining and to the point!

Well that's some of my suggestions. If you are a bit bored and want to check out some videogame things give these guys a shot. I look forward to your recommendations!

Regards,

Chris

I forgot to mention Modern Vintage Gamer. He covers all sorts of things including modding of many systems and interesting insights detailing how convertions were done on limited hardware!

HG101. The podcasts and YouTube channel (reposts of the podcasts, mostly) are meh, but the articles on the site itself are peerless. They've released several books, too.

Matthewmatosis is one guy who really knows his stuff. His videos provide very in depth reviews that touch on a ton of aspects of game design that I think a lot of people take for granted. Just be prepared to have some time set aside if you decide to watch any of his videos. Some of his longer ones can reach upwards of 45 minutes!

Snoman Gaming is another good channel for talking about game design. In fact he has two dedicated series "Good Game Design" and "Bad Game Design" that talk about what exactly makes a game fun or not so fun to play.

tsr- http://atarihq.com/tsr/ - Probably the 1st person outside of Japan to cover the Famicom Disk System. Also has a lot of articles on unlicensed NES games, a tour of late-90's Japan, a great history of Tetris, & interviews with developers.

The Mushroom Kingdom - https://themushroomkingdom.net/ - A still-updated fan site from the mid-90's. Great coverage of the Mario series, including fan works, an encyclopedia, ports to non-Nintendo systems, content left out of the games, info on movies & TV shows, an article trying to figure out when Super Mario Bros was released state-side, etc.

NES World - http://www.nesworld.com/ - Great reference for the NES, especially for pirated systems. Also good coverage of other retro systems.

Atari Museum - http://www.atarimuseum.com/ - A large archive of Atari information. So much I can't describe it all.

AtariProtos - http://atariprotos.com/ - The best place to find info on prototypes of Atari's home video games. Also info on a few other obscure systems.

I visit most of the sites above and thanks for the reminder of Atariprotos.com. I had been going to that site for years but just forgot about it because he rarely updates the site (running out of prototypes) and hadn't been back for over a year. Good to see he found a bunch of new prototypes to review.

Another favorite is the arcade wesbsite: https://www.arcade-museum.com/ (was klov.com back in the day)

There are a bunch of YouTube channels doing really nice console- or handheld-focused work, like:

Atari Archive (Atari 2600 reviews in chronological order, with extensive research and historical context)
Sega Masters (Master System reviews)
Turbo Views (TurboGrafx-16 reviews)
Generation 16 (Genesis reviews in chronological order)
Neo-Alec's Neo Geo Reviews
Virtual Boy Reviews by Johan Öberg, who finished the review set a while back but has an ongoing import review series called FamiFun
PlayStation Year One (direct link to YouTube channel).
Neo Geo Pocket Archives
Swan Song (tragically under-watched series about the WonderSwan, currently on hiatus; really well-done videos)
GameBoyle (Game Boy and Game Boy Color reviews, with some coverage of pirate GB/GBC games as well)

I also subscribe to a bunch of quality multiplatform review and hardware channels, like:

The No Swear Gamer - family-friendly reviews, has completed reviews for all Atari 7800 games
Jeremy Parish's channel, which has a bunch of ambitious review series under the same "Works" banner: Game Boy Works, Game Boy Works Color, NES Works, SNES Works, N64 Works, and Virtual Boy Works.
Game Sack - used to be a 2-man operation, now just one person but content is still good; largely retrogaming-focused but not exclusively so
Cygnus Destroyer - best known as the LJN Defender
Psyklaxia - only posts occasionally, but content is always interesting and often relates to ROM hacks, translations, little-known games, etc.
Nice and Games - hasn't posted in a long, long time, but tons of excellent videos in the archive with a very quirky sense of humor

By the way, a lot of these channels benefit from being watched at 1.5x speed or faster. I use a Chrome extension called Video Speed Controller to allow me to tweak the playback speed by small increments.

Snes Drunk is pretty interesting. He's videos are fairly short and he uploads pretty frequently. Some of his most useful videos I've found are when he goes over english friendly import games.
