2020/7/7: Atari 2600: Donald Duck's Speedboat, Dark Chambers

Donald Duck's Speedboat is mildly amusing, but Dark Chambers is just tedious. Competently programmed yes, but lacking in the fun department.

Never heard of that Donald Duck prototype before, but it actually sounds pretty cool. It inspired me to watch a couple minutes of it on youtube. But all the videos look the same -- a 1-minute run through the same short track. Is it just the same track over and over again, or are there different versions to play through?

I love Dark Chambers being called out as a Gauntlet Clone, especially since the game that Dark Chambers (planned and released on the 7800, 2600 and XE/8-bit line) was based on was the game that led to the development of Gauntlet.

I fixed the wording on that one - thanks for the tip.

Also, changed the Donald Duck publisher from Disney to Atari.

Ummmm Gauntlet AND Dark Chambers were based on the game DANDY. The Atari 2600 was THOUGHT to not handle a game like Gauntlet so Dark Chambers was created as a similar game.

However, someone took up the challenge of hacking Dark Chambers into Gauntlet and pulled it off --

Ah, thanks for the reminder, I forgot the name of Dandy.

And to the limitations of the 2600, remember that at the time of it's run (before the 90s), the programming tricks of the time did not allow for a true Gauntlet development. That later programming tricks pull off games like Gauntlet on the 2600 is a testamant to just how versatile the hardware of the 2600 is (considering it was only supposed to play Tank and Pong type games...).
