The longevity of online games

Postby Voor » March 3rd, 2021, 7:43 pm

I was thinking about how much I enjoy rocket league, and how back in the day (as in 20 years ago), I played a lot of Starcraft. I was surprised to hear that it’s still going, along with games like Counterstrike, and perhaps the granddaddy of them all, Minecraft. Like still VERY popular.

Is this surprising? What are some other online games that have withstood the test of time?

There’s always talk about investing in a game that will suddenly by gone, but I feel like that is often just hypothetical. Seems like, if a game is true quality, it will be profitable for the company to keep active.

I think it's great that these heavy hitters still have an online presence.

The question is, what percentage of previous online games (say from 2000-2010) are no longer supported? I bet that percentage is pretty high.

So while there is hope your favorite online game will continue indefinitely, it's far from guaranteed.
