Atari Flashback 4 Deluxe Edition

Postby VideoGameCritic » December 8th, 2012, 5:28 pm

I reviewed the Atari Flashback 4 back in September.  Recently I received the Deluxe edition which includes paddle controllers and a few other items.

Let me know what you think of my new Atari Flashback 4 Deluxe Edition review.

Atari Flashback 4 Deluxe Edition

Did you spend much time with Battlezone? I'm curious if what I'm encountering is being experienced by other's.

On my Flashback 4, the radar is undependable (Approximately a quarter of the enemies never appear on radar which is a problem that seems to be shared with the FB3 and is something that I've never noticed happening on real hardware). And things start to get more bizarre and severe than just that with some seemingly FB4 specific issues.

In one incident, my tank exploded for no reason and the screen that's displayed when your tank explodes just stayed there until I powered down the console and restarted (Just hitting the reset button didn't cure it).

And later on, the game acted like a 2600 game would if it had been fried after I had lost my last tank. Without pressing a button, the game started to continue. After realizing that I wasn't just seeing the attract mode kicking in, I was able to control the game, my score continued from where it had left off, the mountain graphics were screwed up, and as best as I could tell, I had infinite lifes.

Atari Flashback 4 Deluxe Edition

I have the Flashback 4 standard version.  I bought the paddle controllers separately pretty much just for Super Breakout (mode 7). BIG disappointment   They lag way too much and minor movements jut don't register.  I miss the first ball on super breakout about 50% of the time.  The whole point of the paddle control is the precision! What I don't know is whether the lag is from the controllers or the flashback's emulation.

Leo,
I did not spend much time with Battlezone.  For sake of the review I basically just sampled as many games as I could.  However, I definitely did not see that kind of behavior.

Last time I cleaned paddles the plastic shells broke on 3 of them due to the plastic becoming brittle with age.  Specifically the pegs for the screws broke - and I was careful, especially after the first one broke.

After that I bought a couple sets of the FB4 paddles and they worked flawlessly with my 2600.  As such, any problems is due to the FB4 and not the paddles.

I posted a review at Amazon.  Amazon's been out of stock for a while, so anybody looking to buy some for their real Atari should check out AtGame's storefront.
