I don't generally like sports games but Tony Hawk has always been one of the exceptions to the rule. The main game is always a lot of fun and I love all the objectives each stage has. It really is addicting thinking "just one more" as you try and clear out all the different objectives. It doesn't seem to matter which console it is on, I love them all. The pS1 version is my favorite though. I remember getting Tony Hawk for the gba when it first launched. It looked amazing back then. Great reviews. Fun to read.

I disagree. If you have the expansion pak the game runs just as smooth as the PS1 version. And I always thought the controls were fine. I agree sound takes a toll, but the music in THPS SUCKS anyway.

Half the reason I play THPS is to hear the music, especially the second one. I actually used some special XA utility to rip all the music out of the game because it's that good.

It's a little sad how the NBA Jam series started with 2 great games, and then promptly dove into oblivion and constant rebranding.

Pacguy, I'm referring to the first game. Those punk tunes irritate me. But the third game had some nice music. My favorite soundtrack in the series was the 1st underground though.

I was referring in part to the first game too. I think it went a bit heavy on the ska but balanced it out with stuff like Primus. The music selection went straight uphill for the second one and beyond though.

More on topic, how much smoother is the Dreamcast version of THPS? I saw video online and everything seemed less choppy. I only have the PS1 version so I can't compare.

It's been a while, but the dream cast version I recall was a steady game. I wouldn't say 60fps, 30-35 was more like it. It played well though, and the textures had a nice, smooth look to them.

I played a lot of THPS 1-4 back in the day (too much), and got very good at racking up huge points in them.  For that reason, I have to agree with the Critic on this one, weallmissedme.  While the N64 and DC versions are better in some ways, the PS1 is the better version because the controls are tighter.  It's much easier to perform big combos and rack up huge points in that version.  I don't know if it's due to the programming or if the PS1 controller is just a better fit for the game.  I'd guess it's more due to the controller.  You really need a good D-pad (not analog sticks) for spins and quickly entering big combos, and the Playstation controller just fits that better.  The extra shoulder buttons are a big plus too.  As for the GBA version, it got great reviews, but I thought it was awful; hated the overhead isometric view.

And nice reviews too, Critic.  I see the more concise reviews are already starting.
