They also call it Gaelic football in Ireland, Australian Rules football in Australia, Canadian Football here in Canada,, and I believe in many rugby leagues the ball is called a football. During the last World Cup a guy was on CBC radio with an editorial about how he's tired of everyone saying "everyone else calls soccer football." No, there are other places that call "gridiron" football, and a lot of places who don't call football "football" or "soccer."
As for the reason, perhaps it is called football because the game is so obsessed with measurement and uses the old imperial measurement system. Maybe foot refers to the measurement and not the body part. Of course, by that theory, it should be called "Yardball."
