The wage gap is often misunderstood.

Even by women's activists.

Support fields where women dominate are frequently underfunded, such as social work and mental health support. There's frequently no financial reward for a good therapist who understands her clients, challenges/educates them effectively, and gets results vs. one who argues with them and tries to put them in a box or simply validates everything they say, and allows them to deal with the consequences

And this is because it's just easier to objectively measure success vs. failure using a masculine frame than a feminine one. It's like scorekeeping.

Of course, once you have scorekeeping, there's going to be competition. This drives salaries up, sometimes in excess of their real world value. Add in some really aggressive players, and it's no wonder men's salaries are higher than women's.

This gets even worse when you consider how many men are being asked to sacrifice everything else for their job - women are less likely to allow that kind of exploitation.
