Anyway, Rocky is all about ferocious determination and persistence--and I love movies like that--because it really holds true in life. Putting your mind to something, ignorning the critics, and beating the odds...it's just so American. There will always be naysayers--the losers, the lazy ones. I guess Rocky just strikes a chord with me--because I think persistence is one of the rarest, but most important, traits in a person.

Saw the first one, hated it. Dull and pointless with bad direction. Hated Rambo. In fact the only Stallone film I vaguely like was Cop Land and even that wasn't very good.

[/QUOTE]You didn't like Demolition Man? Are you a girl?

Anyways I'm pretty excited to see the next one... but that's partially because Philly hypes the movie up so much. Back when they made part 5 my future Highschool's band played the Rocky theme at some point in the movie. So my older sister ended up in the movie... yup you'd have to bust out a magnifying glass to see her but she's in there... somewhere.
Overall the first Rocky is the only really good one (I haven't seen the new one yet.) and is as close to timeless as you are going to get. Really the only thing that I think dates it is the music (sort of, this is more a case in the later Rocky movies) and some of the slang they use in the movie. Most people might think that picture quality/look of the film dates it but really it was just a low budget film.

No, one of THE most unintentionally funny parts of the series took place in Rocky III::
Apollo(I may be paraphrasing): You know how you won that last fight? You had the eye of the tiger, the champ, and you've lost it but I'm going to help you get it back!"
(Cheesy training montage with Rocky moping around a swimming pool, a beach, a ring, in front of a mirror w/ Apollo doing a country line dance or something similar to, etc.)
....Then Adriene chews him out on the beach when the big shock of the film is revealed, the twist.....(Rocky yelling)"I'm afraid, is that what you want to hear? You want to break me down? Alright, I'm afraid! For the first time in my life I'm afraid!!"
All of a sudden.....SUPER ROCKY!! HE FINDS THE EYE OF THE TIGER!!!
Finally, the match to end all matches!!
Apollo:Just remember, Rock, Eye of the Tiger!!
(Later in the match, Clubber has Rock against the ropes)
Apollo(Screaming): Eye of the tiger, eye of the tiger!!!
(Rocky busts free and wins the match....in three lousy rounds?!?!?!?!)
....I can't help but to wonder something, though. I'm wondering if Survivor(the band) showed up on Sly's doorstep, hobo sticks in hand, telling him their woeful tale of being a penniless band and they had a song that was sure to be a huge hit if only they had a film to match it with. The lead singer probably asked Sly if he was, by chance, writing a new Rocky and he just so happened to be...which is where Eye of the Tiger comes in. That is the only logical thing I can come up with, on how such a cheesy slogan can be created. If the slogan never existed and I walked up to a buddy of mine and told him, "you know what, back in seventh grade you had the eye of the tiger....what happened? Well, sport, I'm going to help you get it back...grab your short shorts and let's hit the beach...." he probably would not be my friend anymore(or maybe he would...hmmmm).
Anyway, sorry for the long post. I happen to be in a ranting mood and you guys are here as my outlet sometimes.

I think I am going to go see Rocky tonight actually...
Rotten Tomatoes has the movie at a fresh rating of 77% rating right now...thats solid from that site.
Does anyone plan on getting the PSP tie in game that comes out next year?
Also the Critic seemed to love the Rocky game for the Xbox, I wonder if he is planning on reviewing Rocky Legends...

The first Rocky film was inspiring, the way the first Jaws film was horrifying, but both kinda went downhill from there. Once Rocky beat the odds and proved himself, we all knew he'd keep on doing it. Also, I identified with poor, downtroden Rocky more than Famous Rocky ("Rocky" is more about the little guy living the OLD American Dream than Boxing)... but I will always LOVE the rocky Theme (Gonna fly now) and "Eye Of the Tiger", which, BTW is the theme of my HighSchool Football Theme, Rockland Tigers!

Bad direction? lol. It won an Academy Award for best director. Not to mention, it was shot in 28 days. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

Rocky I develops at a slow pace, with lots of grit and character development. This was much more commonplace in films of this era (think "The French Connection" and other film noir-ish stuff). That's what makes his fight later on great, however.
That's why I love the new Rocky. It gets back to basics and spends a good deal of time really exploring the character as he would exist now, then explodes in the end during the training montage and fight.
Someone talked about how American this story and character is. Right on, exactly why I love it. Most of the mainstream media reviewers who don't like it do so because they actually don't believe hard work = success, and therefore cannot understand the appeal of these movies.

I try not to be too political here, but hard work and being very, very good at what you do no longer equals Success-it USED to, but I am a starving artist who is constantly praised on my very fine art drawings and paintings that take a LOT of work; yet I never made more than a tiny bit on some COMMERCIAL stuff. I don't know about other feilds but in Graphic Arts it is a combination of pure luck and WHO YOU KNOW or WHO YOU ARE, i.e., if you come from a prosporous family versus poor/unknown like mine. Just my experiance (I still do art as a hobby and sell a LITTLE.)
