Gaming Forever?

Postby JustLikeHeaven1 » December 21st, 2006, 3:18 pm

Hey Critic, I was wondering if you plan on gaming throughout the ages?

When you are in your 50's and 60's will you still be banging out reviews and playing games?  I don't see any reason why you would stop, but I was just curious.

Also if you do keep the site going for another 10-20 years, do you think you will ever review every game for certain systems (Dreamcast, Virtual Boy, 3DO and Saturn)?  Again, just curious.

Gaming Forever?

Good questions!  Yes, I really love to play games and review them in my free time, so there's no point in stopping.  The site is finally making some money which helps finance my habit.  Gaming is one of those hobbies that's pretty ageless, so as long as I can see and move my fingers, I'll keep playing.  It may seem unusual for 50+ year olds to play video games, but that's because most people of that age today didn't grow up with them, so they tend to lack the interest and appreciation.  However, when our generation gets old, video games will have been a mainstay for our entire lives, so we'll feel right at home with them.

As for reviewing every game available for some systems, it could happen, but it's not really my goal.  It would drive me insane (and broke) if I even attempted that with most systems.  The Dreamcast is a possiblity however.  I have about 200 of the 250 games released for it.

250 games released stateside but many more Jap only.

One possible problem could be RSI though, you're a developer right?  It's pretty common in our industry.

I'd think the Virtual Boy would be easiest. That had less than 20 games I believe; I had all but 2 just from buying a system with games off of Ebay.

RSI = repetitive strain injury.   Sometimes reffered to as carpal tunnel syndrome.  When you have spent a long time working at a computer depending on your body, whether you stop to massage your wrists, sitting position, etc. you can develop crippling pain in your wrists which can make tasks like typing quite agonising and makes playing video games a problem.  It's quite common.

I have a feeling that as our generation ages, more "classic" gaming is going to become mainstream. I like model trains too, and sometimes read CLASSIC TOY TRAINS which is all about Lionel, American Flyer...the trains our grandparents grew up with. I think the same will be true of games, when you all are 60 you will still be talkin' 'bout the 2600 vs. INTV or SNES vs. Genny on th' back porch overlooking the flying car port! It doesn't matter what it is-Lionel trains, Barbie dolls, Dinosaur Models- if a generation grew up when they were popular, they will want to relive those"golden days" in their silver days.

Hey, remember, these- are--The DAYS.....!

Glad to hear that you won't ever be giving up videogames...I find it strange when some people get to a certain age and all the sudden stop playing games because they've "outgrown" them.

As long as you keep playing and reviewing I will keep coming to this site.

Keep up the great work Critic.

I think "outgrown" is another way of saying, "I'd like to, but I don't have time with the wife, kids, house, job, etc."  Either that or they have a domineering wife who won't let them play (it happens).  The idea that video games are just kid stuff is antiquated.   Actually, today's market seems aimed toward a more mature audience.

Right on. I actually plan on passing on the pleasure of gaming to my children and greatly look forward to doing so. There is no reason to have family be an excuse when gaming can be such a great family activity.
