Sonic the Hedgehog on 360

Postby VideoGameCritic » December 26th, 2006, 11:52 am

If you like to read reviews where I trash games, wait until you see my review for Sonic the Hedgehog for the Xbox 360.  I'm going to have a field day with this one.

The mastermind behind this monstrosity obviously had no clue as to what made Sonic famous in the first place.  The controls are repugnant, the stages are recycled, and the objectives nebulous.  They've taken all the mediocre aspects of Sonic Adventure and emphasized the stuff nobody liked, such as wandering around talking to people (who have nothing to say), or barreling through stages while not being in control.

I'm still playing, but it will take a miracle to save this one from a big fat F.

It's amazing how they can screw these games up. I played the demo for about five minutes and it was terrible. It's a shame, especially considering the Sonic Adventure games for the Dreamcast were well done for the most part.

Whatever you do Dave, no posting of a review until "we" have had a chance to give it a good once-over!  I may have to think up put-downs ahead of time for this one it sounds so bad.  I can hear the sucking sound from Reisterstown.  Is that light I see bending at an odd angle and towards EC?  Does the game suck so hard that even light cannot escape it's power?  Look on the bright side, maybe the multiplayer mode will have some redeeming qualities.  Hahahahaha!

I rented it a few weeks ago.  I gotta say, I'm glad I used a free rental, because this game isn't worth the 6 bucks it costs to rent.  While I appreciated the new super fast running levels (even though they had a ton of trial and error), everything else in it sucked.   The platforming levels with tails were awful, the boss fights were horrible, and the city levels ruined it.  I got annoyed by this quest where you had to play hide and go seek with some kids in town, and I decided to quit because it was the most frusterating thing ever, and seemed to have nothing to do with a sonic game.

Ok I gave it another shot.  I tried playing as silver, but his level had no speed and it felt like a third rate Psi Ops with the world's worst controls.  I didn't make it past the first level.  I took the game back even though I still had 3 days left.  I'd give the game a D- based on my experience, and the only thing saving it from an F was that awesome super fast running level.

Whenever Sonic Team is displayed on a game that now means that you are getting the worst of the worst. Yuki Naka should be fired. I really hope somebody buys them and forces them to do good games. I know if I was in charge of Sega I would bring in some of that attitude they used to have when the Genesis was out.

Yuki Naka isn't part of the Sonic Team anymore.  He hasn't been for a while.  He is working in his own firm that is financially dependent on Sega, but independent of Sega in terms of direction and artistic freedom.

I LOVED everything about Sonic Adventure including the walking and talking bits.

I HATE everything about the new Sonic.

Yeah, what happened with Sonic? They said they were taking it back to the series roots, and there are glimmers in there of what could have made it great, but the execution is shockingly bad.  I'm almost starting to think that the series should go the Tomb Raider route, with Sega taking the series away from Sonic Team to bring it back to its former glory.

Hopefully, the delay of the PS3 version will fix enough of the issues to salvage the game at least a little bit (and if they do so, make a patch available to 360 players), but I'm not too hopeful.

Now if you'll excuse me, I must go off into the corner and weep at how far my beloved Sonic has fallen.

I think people who work on these games forget why people like Sonic in the first place.  Largely it's there in Sonic Rush for the DS, so I thought they were on track.  Sonic needs to be fast and fun.  That's it.  If you want to throw in a couple exploratory sequences, fine, but if the game isn't blazingly fast while still leaving you feeling in control, then what the hell are you selling?  It certainly isn't Sonic.
