Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (2D)

Postby m0zart1 » December 29th, 2006, 4:01 pm

I don't know if you guys have seen this or not, but it's basically a 2D version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time made by a fan of the game in the graphical style of A Link to the Past.

You'll have to do some scrolling down to see the information and the screenshots.  If this is for real, it looks very VERY good.

Considering that this is effectively a ripoff of Nintendo's intellectual property, it could easily be blocked from release.  But it's hard to see Nintendo doing that.  They've allowed some independent gamers posting non-profit games to use their trademarks before, such as with The Legend of Zelda: The Lampshade of No Significance!  The problem with this one is that it's a ripoff of the entire game structure of Ocarina of Time, so Nintendo might have reason to take larger issue.

Lampshade off No Signifigance was Zelda in name only. It was more or less an adventure game where you played as Link. Hell, it wasn't even in Hyrule- there were fast food chains and cameos from other games.

This game, however, uses both Nintendo's graphics and their entire game structure of Ocarina. It's very likely Nintendo will shut this down if they haven't already.

Not likely if it hasn't happened yet, this thing has been being mentioned in forums for years.

Apparently they sent a cease and desist order by email, but because it was by email, they didn't take it seriously.

Thing is, "Link" and "Zelda" are still trademark names and icons, so I don't think it matters if it is was Zelda in name only.  However, I think that because Lampshade of No Significance was a parody, that it probably was protected under some SCOTUS first amendment rulings.  This game, well, it's just a blatant remake of an entire IP.  Who knows how that will eventually turn out.

Ninty will probably shut it down if it gains more than just the occasional Kotaku mention. They like to guard their IP pretty tightly. American game developers tend to be more forgiving to this type of thing.

Personally, as long as nobody is making money from it, I don't see any problem, but I understand Nintendo's position as well. Maybe some of the more legal beagal posters of the forum can weigh in on this.

Well I mean, Lampshade was a quick flash game that was essentially an adventure game with Link in it. This game won't stop future Zelda titles from selling, so I don't see why Nintendo would go after it. OoT2D might slow some sales down, though, for obvious reasons, which would be reason enough to go after it.

anyone see the 3D remake of Chrono Trigger some guys were doing a few years ago?  I didn't see why Square was so up in arms; just pay the guys and release the game commercially!
