One theory is that, in order to maximize profits, Sony decided to use the smallest possible flash storage. Aside from Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid, each of the games listed on the PS1 Classic was originally released on only one disc. Referencing the PlayStation store for digitally downloaded content, the file size for each game (if available for sale) is:

Battle Arena Toshinden - n/a
Cool Boarders 2 - 135.82 MB
Destruction Derby - 65.39 MB
Final Fantasy VII - 1.32 GB
Grand Theft Auto - n/a
Intelligent Qube - n/a
Jumping Flash - 268.96 MB
Metal Gear Solid - 779.72 MB
Mr Driller - 172.48 MB
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee - 469.11 MB
Rayman - 96.52 MB
Resident Evil Director’s Cut - 298.94 MB
Revelations: Persona - n/a (Persona 2 was 440 MB)
Ridge Racer Type 4 - 351.63 MB
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo - n/a (HD Remix is 52 MB)
Syphon Filter - 383.29 MB
Tekken 3 - n/a (Tekken 2 is 484.46 MB)
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six - 112.65 MB
Twisted Metal - 71.88 MB
Wild Arms - 299.27 MB

Using Base-10 addition, the total size for the games we know the size of is 4825.66 MB.

If we were to add Revelations: Persona, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, and Tekken 3 based on similar games, the total would be 5802.12 MB.

It's likely that if one were to add the sizes of Battle Arena Toshinden, Grand Theft Auto, and Intelligent Qube, the total Base-10 size would still be less than 8 GB.

Therefore, I think the reason many other games have been left out was done to not exceed the 8 GB storage threshold. It doesn't excuse the omission of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (355.55 MB), though.

I think I’m gonna pick one up...maybe next year. As a Nintendo fanboy, I haven’t played any of those games (except Oddworld on PC), so it may be a fun experience for me.

I haven’t seen anyone else ask—why no sports games?
