I put a lot of time into Astrosmash recently....its a good game on live arcade...

Never bought a 32 x thought it looked like a turd....

I have only ever heard bad things about the Doom port....

I am waiting for the Saturn review... given the way things are going I think the critic might think its an A... I thought D and that is being generous..

I get the sense that the hatred on Doom for 32X is connected to the system itself, as well as the more understandable idea that the 32X was thought to be powerful enough to bring the game home completely, including on the music front.  I think the Angry Video Game Nerd put it best when he reviewed Doom for the 32X:

"...the Super Nintendo version had more levels.  The only thing it lacked was the graphics; they're horrible.  On the 32X, they're better, but my point is, everything should be better."

I think that really was the explanation behind it all, but in retrospect, the 32X Doom was actually pretty decent and the review gave a good explanation as to why, even with the limitations.

I'm currently enjoying 32x Doom, it moves at a fair lick, maintains a decent frame rate and like the critic, I don't really notice the enemies only forward face. I do kinda suck at FPS games though so I'm finding the going pretty tough.

However I do have a question, I'm sure I've read that there are 17 levels in the 32x game with 15 selectable at the start and to play the final two levels you have to beat the other 15 (doesn't matter which order).
Now this seems a bit bonkers as it can take me upto 20 minutes to complete 1 level, so completing all the levels would take a marathon session to beat the game. And seeing as the game has no battery save or password system it seems a tad extreme.

Any Doom experts able to answer ? Chuckee ?

I'm currently attempting to play through the entire 32x library using a combination of games I've purchased and my Everdrive flash cart for the imports and ludicrously expensive. Man I love Doom !
It must have been mind blowing back in the day, this could almost pass as a Saturn game it's that smooth.
Finally got to grips with it and played through for the full ending (what is that end credits music ?) although admittedly I had to drop a difficulty level. That last level is still hellish tough though, and you cannot access it unless you play through all the levels from level 1, no choosing your levels for the full ending.
This is the only experience I have of Doom, but if this is allegedly one of the poorer versions than the others must be awesome.
Major fun factor with this one B+
