Cabela's Adventure Camp

The Cabelas brand evokes peaceful images of tracking down adorable furry creatures in their natural habitats and
shooting them. With Adventure Camp, Cabelas tries to lighten the mood a bit with a collection of motion-controlled outdoor activities. If you kill anything in this game, you're probably doing it wrong. There are about ten events you can play individually or in random order. The Move controllers are required despite the fact that conventional controls would probably make more sense. Biking is the best of the bunch, letting you lean the controller from side-to-side to navigate dirt trails while hopping over logs. The rumbling effect of riding down a bumpy path is effective. The kayak event features scenic white water rapids, and it might have been my favorite except it made me queasy after a while. Skeet shooting is a huge disappointment because those clay pigeons move so damn slow! Not only is it hard to miss, but I end up hitting two or three at a time! Archery is so dull I couldn't even sit through the event in its entirety. Fishing really feels contrived, requiring you to catch certain colored fish to progress. There's no realism at all. The remaining events aren't really worth mentioning, but you should be warned about the dreaded "hogwhacked". This whack-a-mole/Simon hybrid from hell requires you to repeat patterns ad nauseum to Alvin and the Chipmunk voice effects. My friend Brent made a point of playing this event to its conclusion just to push me to the edge of insanity. I enjoy the guitar music in Adventure Camp, and I guess the game is playable head-to-head provided you strictly limit your events. But it's a still a lousy game, and having motion controls grafted on top doesn't help. © Copyright 2017 The Video Game Critic.

Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp

It's hard to believe this disc worked flawlessly on my PS3 ten years ago. Now it suffers from serious issues and won't play at all on a dedicated Blu Ray player. Whenever a new scene is loading the first second of the scene is played before it suddenly restarts. It's annoying but you could argue Dragon's Lair II was a lost cause to begin with. Unlike the first game which featured compact scenes that were logical to navigate (more or less), this sequel features long, complicated sequences during which you're expecting to execute a rapid-fire series of actions. If the actions made sense that would be one thing, but they rarely do, so you just end up responding to the flashing hints. Dragon's Lair II sucks as a game but the extra features give you the option to just watch it as a movie. I was hoping to kick back with some popcorn and enjoy, but the pacing is so hectic and the animation so rough you can't even tell what's happening! Perhaps the bug is affecting movie playback as well? The time travel theme whisks Dirk through all sorts of different places, many of which don't make any sense. What does Alice in Wonderland have to do with time travel? Why is he fighting Cupid? If I can't even stomach
watching this game how could I be expected to
play it? Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp feels like a really bad animated film with a video game grafted over top of it. I tend to have a soft spot for these laserdisc games but I can't tolerate this one at all. © Copyright 2020 The Video Game Critic.
